“I love this town!”
-Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) in ‘Ghostbusters’, speaking for New Yorkers everywhere.
The Big Apple. The City That Never Sleeps. The Melting Pot. New Amsterdam. Gotham.
New York has almost as many nicknames as it has neighbourhoods. A film hub long before Hollywood, the city is a vital part of American cinema, the backdrop to over a century’s worth of storytelling and stories.
In honour of the metropolis that has fired my imagination and so many others, I’m launching a year-long tribute to New York on film. Every month from now until December, I’ll be writing about a different film set in New York City. It’ll be less an encyclopaedic guide, more a personal tour of films I love and films I’d like to know better.
Stay tuned for the first instalment, coming soon.
